Week 7

Packing for your Vancouver Move

1. Eliminate clutter

Start by creating a plan. Set out your blue print for the move. Get out pictures and mesurements to help you draw a room by room floor plan of your new home. Decide how you want to use each space in your new home. This will help you decide how much room you really have.

The house tour. Go through each closet and storage area to determine exactly what you have. This is the time to decide for each item, whether you will keep it, sell it, donate it, or throw it away. For items you are going to keep, determine where it will go in your new home. This will help you determine if you have the room for these items in your new home.

Organize items by type. When items are organized by type groups, it is easier to decide what items you will keep. Always have a donate, sell, and throw away group whenever you organize your room items. Examples of other type catagories include:

  • small applianes
  • plastics (make sure to match lids with containers. Throw away the containers from store boughten items. Only keep the nice stuff)
  • pots & pans
  • dishes and glassware
  • cookbooks
  • etc.

2. Arrange for document transfers

Medical and Insurance records can take some time to transfer. It is a good idea to start contacting these offices to initiate any document transfers that may be required. This is especially important if your are moving to a new city or Province. Here are some suggestions:

  • medical records
  • veterinarian records
  • legal or financial records
  • school records
  • day care
  • insurance records
  • clubs and memberships

3. Finalize real estate records

Time to finalize all your real estate records and documents. Make sure all your dates and numbers are correct.

You will know if you need to place any items in storage and arrange for temporary logging. Remember to factor these items into your moving budget, and keep all documents in your moving file we created in Week 8 .
