Week 5
Week 5
1. Time to notify people
Time to notify people, services and business of your move. You'll want to provide ample advance notice to services such as security company, lawn care, cleaning, etc of your move date.
You started making your list of contacts in week 6 . Time to pull it out of your Moving File and organize yourself. Did you include:
| Friends and Family | Health Providers |
| Post Office | – Doctors |
| Utilities | – Dentist |
| – Telephone | – Veterinarian |
| – Cable | – Pharmacy |
| – Water | Schools |
| – Hydro | Subscriptions |
| – Internet Provider | – Magazines & Newspapers |
| Insurance Companies | – Book & Record Clubs |
| Banks and Financial Institutions | Travel/Auto Club |
| Creditors | Church |
| Government agencies & the CRA | |
Notify your utility companies and credit cards companies of your new address by filling out their change of address cards. Many will allow you to change your address on-line or by phone.
Send “We've Moved” cards to friends and family to notify them of your date of move and new address.
Change of address cards from the post office are a way for junk mailers to track you down. If you want to decrease the amount of junk mail you receive, do not fill these forms out.
2. Start packing
When packing, think not only of what is going in the box, but where it will be used in your new home. Your new location may have more or less rooms then you currently have. Think of how you want to use each space.
Start by packing infrequently used items first. Load them in the truck last. Move them into the new home first. The result is the more often used items such as clothing and dishware will be unpacked first.
When labelling your boxes, use coloured paper to identify it's location in the new home. You can identify the floor, or even individual rooms by colour. Write down the destination room and box number on your label. Keep an inventory of the content in a moving notebook. By numbering your boxes, it is easier to see if anything is missing once the move is complete.
Refer to Moving Tips section for general organization tips. The How To Pack section contains many helpful tips and videos on how to pack specific household items.
3. Arrange for storage
If you will require any short or long term storage, now is the time to make these arrangements. You may need to coordinate with your movers. They may be transporting items to your storage and will need to pack the truck accordingly.
4. Secure your mover
Time to take out your moving quotes from your moving file and finalize the deal. You want to give enough notice to secure the date and time you want. Finalize these details and get their estimate on the time they will need to complete the move. Be sure you have their quote in writting before you sign off.
With your time frame set out, you can now make further arrangements for child and pet sitting during the move.
