The Final Count Down

Here are the final checklists. Now, breath slowly. You've followed your plan and made it this far… everything is going to be fine.

Day before move

• Organize your items in order to be loaded
• ensure all boxes are properly labeled with content and location in new home
• verify packing and labeling of fragile items
• arrange to leave keys with new owners, real estate agent, landlord, or trusted individual
• inform a friend or relative of your itinerary in case of an emergency

Moving Out Day

• Load items in pre-assigned order
• Check every closet, cupboard, rooms one last time
• write down utility meter readings and put in your moving file
• leave a note with your new address for new owner to forward any stray mail items
• record van driver’s name and confirm destination address
• turn off the water heater
• set thermostat to 15 degrees
• turn off all switches
• lock all windows and doors

Moving In Day

• Check all appliances, furnace and hot water tank
• Make sure the utilities have been connected
• Take note of utility meter readings and put them in your moving file
• Check with Canada Post for any mail being held
• Use your floor plan to direct household items to the correct location

After the move

• Keep your moving file in a safe place for tax time
• Update your driver’s license and insurance
• Register to vote
